Who can contribute

Who can contribute?

Only M.E.B.A. members, applicants, retirees, and staffers may make contributions to the Political Action Fund. This is a voluntary, member-funded effort.

How much should I give?

As much as you can reasonably afford. Many members contribute 1-2% of their vacation earnings. Even $25 a month makes a difference. Vacation check-offs are the simplest and most consistent method.

Frequently asked questions

Common questions about the PAF.

If you have additional questions, contact Roland Rexha at M.E.B.A. Headquarters. Visitors are always welcome to follow the political team for a day in D.C.

When times are tough, why should I still contribute?

Your PAF contribution should be one of the last things cut when tightening your belt. It is the best tool the union has to influence the policy makers who are responsible for decisions that directly affect your job. Every M.E.B.A. job is directly dependent on federal laws and regulations.

Are PAF dollars used for officials to "wine and dine"?

Absolutely not. Every dollar distributed from the PAF goes directly to the political campaign of legislators who are working to promote M.E.B.A. and the U.S.-flag maritime industry. Every PAF expenditure is, by law, required to be reported to the Federal Election Commission. When checks are given at receptions, the sole purpose is to educate the legislator and raise the profile of M.E.B.A.

Isn't the PAF already large enough?

Contributions to the PAF have declined by 37% over the past 10 years, even though they're needed now more than ever. Your contribution will help solidify the M.E.B.A. and the merchant marine, and ensure the longevity of a strong U.S. maritime industry for future generations as well as a vibrant pension plan for current and future retirees.

I'm not involved in the process. Why should I give?

M.E.B.A. officers and political staff have made the process as transparent as possible. PAF dollars are distributed to the Democrat, Republican, or Independent who best supports M.E.B.A., regardless of administration. Every member is encouraged to visit Washington D.C., meet with the PAF Chairman Roland Rexha and the political team, and attend Congressional meetings and political events.

How much should I contribute?

As much as you can reasonably afford. Many members contribute up to 2%, however 1% or even $25 a month is certainly helpful. Vacation check-offs are the simplest method and help maintain regularity and budgeting in the PAF.
